It has been almost 5 decades since Joyce died in that tragic car wreck between Winnsboro and Mount Vernon. As I recall, Joyce had a summer job at the glove factory between semisters at East Texas State where he was studying Industrial Arts. There was a head-on collision between the Buick convertable and another car in the ditch that somehow involved a bus. The details of the accident have dimmed with the years, but the grief has not abated. Joyce was the best of us all, and he was the first of us to die. The picture of the class officers says says it well. He was standing between Ray, his teammate on the first string in football, and Joe Dan, his fellow Lone Star Farmer. Truly, a man for all seasons, and a friend to me. His was the saddest funeral I ever attended.
